For a time, Instagram was the leader in quality iPhoneography and Phoneography. Do you remember when we used to love checking our Instagram accounts to see all of the quality artwork that our friends hads posted? Remember when it was a fun loving community of artists and designers? When you could visit the Popular Page and be astounded by the jaw dropping photography?
Well my friends, those days are long gone. The gorgeous sunset pictures have been replaced by internet memes of teen pop stars. Amazing macro shots of local foliage, replaced by “bathroom mirror selfies”. Wonderful, wide angle, landscape shots, replaced by wanna-be models and attention starved teens. Comments such as “Awesome shot, really love the lighting!” have been replaced by “Follow me, I follow back!” or “Can I have a shout out please!”
Where did it all go wrong? In my opinion it all started with the introduction of Instagram on Android devices. Shortly after, Instagram was acquired by Facebook for a small sum of 1 BILLION dollars. That’s when the flood of attention-starved, pop star obsessed teenagers began. Will it ever go back to the way it was? Doubtful.
I think it’s safe to say that Instagram has become the MySpace of “Social Photography Sharing” platforms, filled with creepers and tweens looking for attention. For now, the Popular Page has been replaced with the Explore Page. This is where you can see some of Instagram’s most “liked” photos: underage Swedish and Korean girls in provocative poses; sports icons drinking a bottle of champagne with their gold medal, and let’s not forget about the Kardashians.
But there is still hope in bringing Instagram back to being a platform about ART and not popularity. There are still users out there posting REAL art. Take a look at some of the iPhoneography/Phoneography groups, such as;Rebels United Worldwide, Implus, Gang Family, and more, who have held their ground and continue to post quality visual art for the Instagram world to see. If it wasn’t for groups and users such as these, “art” on Instagram would be truly DEAD!
